Using Your Voice (Ages 5–10)

Using Your Voice is a preventative, child-friendly story designed to help children aged 5–10 understand how to express their feelings clearly, confidently, and safely. Through simple language and relatable situations, children learn that their voice matters and that speaking up can help them stay safe and supported.

What children learn

  • That their voice is important
  • How to recognise when something feels wrong or unfair
  • How to use clear words to express feelings
  • That speaking up is brave and helpful
  • How to ask a trusted adult for support

What adults can reinforce

  • Calm, repeatable language around expressing feelings
  • Encouragement to speak clearly and confidently
  • Listening without interrupting or dismissing
  • Reinforcing that speaking up leads to support

For parents

Using Your Voice helps families introduce communication and confidence in a way that feels calm and manageable. Families can also explore our For Parents page for additional guidance and recommended storybooks. The goal is to build early emotional awareness and give children simple, practical language they can use when something feels wrong.

For schools

This story supports early intervention conversations and can complement PSHE-style discussions around communication, confidence, and speaking up. Schools can explore our For Schools page for safeguarding-aligned information and implementation guidance.

Adult Companion Toolkit

Using Your Voice is supported by an optional structured adult companion toolkit. Learn more on our Toolkits page. The toolkit provides reflection guidance, safeguarding-aware prompts, and practical reinforcement steps that may support consistent adult conversations at home or within school settings.
